Historical Note
The Heartland Chautauqua, a program of the Missouri and Illinois Humanities Councils, made the first stop on its "west tour" in Kirksville the summer of 2000. The modern Chautauqua is reminiscent of the traveling culture platforms of the early 20th Century but takes a slightly different approach. In the "old days" the big-names of the day - lecturers and performers, political, literary, theatrical and other figures – would present programs of current interest. Today, scholar-actors recreate historical figures who present educational and entertaining programs "in character" around a set theme.
