Scope and Contents

Personal military and pension records and documents created by John M. Davis as Company Commander, Company H, 63rd Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry. Bi-monthly muster rolls contain enrollment, discharge, promotions and other status changes for all company members December 1861 through December 1863.

Biographical Note

John M. Davis was born December 25, 1835 in Hamilton, Butler County, Ohio and moved to Kirksville shortly after the end of the war. He died in Kirksville July 5, 1927 and, according to his obituary, was buried at Forrest-Llewellyn Cemetery. Captain Davis was a member of the Kirksville post of the Grand Army of the Republic.

Custodial History

These papers came to Pickler Memorial Library with the E. M. Violette Papers after his death in 1940. How Professor Violette obtained them is not known.
