Scope and Contents

Letters, memos, telegrams, newspaper clippings, and photographs accumulated during Wat Arnold's terms as Representative in the House of Representatives, United State Congress (1943-1949). during which time he represented the interests of his constituents in the First District of Missouri (Adair, Clark, Daviess, Grundy, Knox, Lewis, Linn, Livingston, Macon, Marion, Mercer, Putnam, Schuyler, Scotland, Shelby, and Sullivan Counties). Subjects include radio station KIRX, flood control, the Kirksville College of Osteopathy and Surgery, postal matters, elections, rural electrification administration, speeches, and more.

Biographical Note

From the Official Manual, State of Missouri, 1943-1944:

WAT ARNOLD (Republican), born on a farm near Downing, Schuyler County, MO, September 21, 1879; attended the Coffey, MO, rural school and was graduated from the Kirksville State Teachers College (First District Normal School); taught school at Atlanta, MO, 1903-1904; entered the lumber business in 1905, and in 1908 organized the Arnold Lumber Co., in which company he is now associated with his son, Sam M. Arnold; past president of the Rotary Club and Chamber of Commerce of Kirksville; active in civic and fraternal organizations; member of the Presbyterian Church; married Miss Myra Gertrude Mills; three children; elected to the Seventy-eighth Congress on November 3, 1942.
