Historical Note
The Grim-Smith Hospital was founded November 24, 1909, by Dr. Ezra C. Grim and his brother Dr. Edward A. Grim, and in 1924 they were joined by Dr. E. Sanborn Smith. A year after the hospital was founded, a two-story hospital building was built in Kirksville, Missouri, at the corner of Marion Street and Patterson Avenue. In the 1930s, two prominent physicians joined the hospital - Dr. George L. Grim, the son of Dr. Ezra Grim, and Dr. J.J. Wimp. The hospital expanded and continued under physician leadership when in 1972, five area physicians purchased the hospital. By 1980, the 75-bed hospital had ten physician-owners and employed 240 people. In 1996, the hospital merged with the Kirksville Osteopathic Medical Center to become KOMC’s south facility where only specific medical services were offered. Truman State University bought the land and the hospital building in December 2000 and has used the building to house various services since that time.
