Biographical Note

John David Black (1908-1996) received his BA in Museum Zoology from the University of Kansas, 1935, then did graduate work in Aquatic Biology and Ichthyology at Indiana University (MA, 1937) and the University of Michigan (PhD, 1940). He joined the faculty of Northeast Missouri State Teachers College (now Truman State University) in 1948 as Professor of Zoology and retired as Professor Emeritus of Science in 1973. Dr. Black was considered an expert on Arkansas fishes, Mississippi Valley invertebrates and wildlife conservation.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Dr. Black gave the library his field notebooks when he retired in 1973. They contain notes on fish studies he made while a biologist with the Wisconsin Conservation Department in the 1940s. A scrapbook of Dr. Black's contributions to the field and information regarding the Pre-Osteopathic Club at Truman State University was compiled and donated in 2018 by Dr. Betty Jo White, a close colleague and student of Dr. Black.
