Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

An album of 35 photos of Kirksville, Missouri, buildings, businesses and people created by "Drake, Fotografer" and originally owned by Clifford Elmore Henry. Using Kirksville city directories, local histories and articles in Kirksville newspapers of the day, we have been able to determine that most of the photos in this album were taken 1893 January-April, the only period when all the pictured businesses were in operation simultaneously.

Historical Note

Benjamin Franklin Henry (1847-1931), long-time Kirksville druggist, operated the Henry Drug Store on the south side of the Square with the help of wife Barbara Isabelle Bates for over 30 years. After selling out to the Rexall Drug chain in the early 1900s, he helped organize the Kirksville Gas Company and served as its first President and General Manager from 1909 until the late 1920s. That's a Kirksville Cycling Club sweater he's wearing.
