Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

An album of 35 photos of Kirksville, Missouri, buildings, businesses and people created by "Drake, Fotografer" and originally owned by Clifford Elmore Henry. Using Kirksville city directories, local histories and articles in Kirksville newspapers of the day, we have been able to determine that most of the photos in this album were taken 1893 January-April, the only period when all the pictured businesses were in operation simultaneously.

Historical Note

Kirksville Mercantile College students and faculty are posed on the steps of the school at 210 E. Washington (corner Washington and High). The College was founded in 1881, occupied this building from 1882 until 1894, and closed in 1897. Frank M. Harrington purchased the building in 1894 and later remodeled it as the Harrington Theatre (a.k.a. The Opera House). G.M. Barrett, seated center front, was Principal when this photo was taken.
