Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

An album of 35 photos of Kirksville, Missouri, buildings, businesses and people created by "Drake, Fotografer" and originally owned by Clifford Elmore Henry. Using Kirksville city directories, local histories and articles in Kirksville newspapers of the day, we have been able to determine that most of the photos in this album were taken 1893 January-April, the only period when all the pictured businesses were in operation simultaneously.

Historical Note

Familiarly known as "Baird's Bank," the Porter and Stebbins Bank was organized in 1865 with William Thomas Baird as Manager. Baird and a partner purchased the stock in 1867 and he retrained at least partial ownership until 1906 when it was sold to Citizens National Bank and ceased to exist as a separate entitiy. The bank changed names with each change in its partnership make-up and was First National Bank, the name on the window in this photo, from 1882 to 1894. Other businesses seen in this block (south side of the square): Brewington and Son Dry Goods, 103; Henry Drugs, 105; and C.E. McDowell, Attorney, upstairs at 105 1/2.
