Historical Note
James Martin, M.D., came to Kirksville in 1884 and was in medical practice here for many years. As did many families with large homes, the Martins rented out rooms, and frequently had single or young married couples from the Normal School faculty living with them. The folks scattered about the house and lawn are James and his wife Adalaide Halladay, their three children, Ruth, Howard, and Walter, his sister Belle, and probably some of their tenants.
