Historical Note

Real estate dealer and entrepreneur John L. Porter, owned numerous commercial and residential properties in Kirksville. He also organized the Porter Coal and Mining and Pennsylvania Coal and Mining companies, owned mercantile stores and freight companies, and held considerable stock in two of the city's banks. His townhouse apartments, Porter Flats, were built one block west of the Square in the fall of 1890.
